Job description: The Director of Accounting leads, directs, and is accountable for all accounting, finance, and billing activities to ensure DREMC accurately completes all internal and external required filings, reports, and analysis in a timely manner with a high degree of proficiency. The Director of Accounting is a strategic partner to both the CEO and management team for the effective execution of all cooperative strategies involving rates, debt, and associated cash requirements to fulfill the cooperative’s mission of providing the safest and most reliable power at the lowest feasible cost.

Supervisory responsibility — The Director of Accounting leads the billing and accounting teams, consisting of approximately 10 DREMC team members. This position also serves as a vital team member for the CEO and the executive team. Additional leadership is required for external contractors, lenders, and regulators. Coordination with and leadership for other DREMC departments as appropriate is required.

Budget responsibility — In addition to a division budget for software, training, and related items, this position is responsible for the effective communication, implementation, and monitoring of the corporate budget of several hundred million dollars annually.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Consistently models the Leadership Principles of Leadership Landmines, 8 Management Catastrophes and How to Avoid Them.
  2. Ensures accuracy and timeliness of all billing and accounting deliverables for both internal and external DREMC financial functions.
  3. Oversees all processes related to a completely successful cooperative annual audit and related functions.
  4. Ensures all DREMC lender requirements and communication needs are met in a professional manner.
  5. Satisfies all state and federal requirements and filings as appropriate.
  6. Studies and applies Duck River Electric Membership Corporation policies, procedures, By-Laws, rules and applicable regulations as imposed by state or federal regulators and lenders.
  7. Provides training for the accounting and billing teams to ensure competence, growth, and development.
  8. Conducts accurate and consistent employee performance evaluations while maintaining a productive and professional atmosphere by coaching, training, and motivating employees.
  9. Maintains confidential employee and member information in conformance to good industry practices.
  10. Organizes and ensures efficient electronic transformation from multiple paper processes that support potential remote work of key employees for short periods of time without team disruptions or delays.
  11. Supports the CEO and management team efforts to effectively communicate to the board of directors as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education —Undergraduate degree in accounting is required with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better. MBA and/or CPA is preferred. Additional industry certifications are preferred.
Experience — A minimum of five (5) years of utility accounting experience is required (retail). At least two (2) years of accounting supervisory experience is required. Experience with TVA as a wholesale provider is preferred.
Certification/License, etc. —Valid Tennessee Driver’s License or ability to obtain a license prior to the first day of employment is required. Must be eligible to remain insured as a driver by the cooperative’s group liability policy for the automotive fleet.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities — A well-rounded understanding of the electric utility industry is desired. The Director of Accounting will be a phenomenal communicator that consistently displays an incredible willingness to listen for intent and watch for the best questions to ask. He or she will display a strong degree of analytical prowess, while consistently demonstrating a professional humility and hunger that inspires positive energy to others.
