Be Prepared & Stay Weather Aware

When severe weather is predicted, we encourage members to stay alert and make preparations for possible power outages. DREMC’s System Operations Center monitors the grid for outages 24/7 using our advanced metering infrastructure and outage management system. The advanced meter at your location reports outages within minutes to our team who first attempts to restore power remotely using today’s technology and dispatches crews when needed to make repairs.
Outage Prep

To stay safe and be prepared for severe weather and related outages, DREMC recommends taking the following precautions:

  • Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including Southern TN Weather, to get hyperlocal updates and warnings.
  • Keep a flashlight nearby.
  • Charge phones, portable chargers, and other devices before severe weather arrives.
  • Invest in a portable, battery-operated weather radio.
  • In the event of an outage, use caution with space heaters and backup generators. Space heaters should be kept away from flammable materials such as furniture or curtains and only be used in well-ventilated areas. Generators should be operated outside the home and connected safely to run appliances. Please remember that generators can create a back-feed hazard for DREMC line crews, if not properly connected to the grid.*
  • Secure patio furniture, grills, umbrellas, and trampolines in the event of strong winds.
  • Avoid downed power lines, and consider them to be energized and dangerous. Please report a downed power line to DREMC.
  • Prepare an outage survival kit with items such as canned food, manual can opener, bottled water, portable phone chargers, extra batteries, and first-aid supplies.
  • During winter outages, be sure to have extra blankets and other warm clothing available for each member of your household.
  • If there are small children in the home, consider helping them pass the time with non-electric activities such as playing cards and board games, reading books, or drawing.

* Caution: Be sure to review the safety specifications recommended by the manufacturer for heaters, generators, and other equipment you plan to use during the outage to ensure safety.
