Scammers Targeting Members: What You Need to Know

Summary

DREMC is alerting members to a coordinated scam in which callers impersonate the cooperative, pressure for immediate payment and use convincing tactics to appear legitimate.

Duck River Electric (DREMC) has received several reports of scammers impersonating the cooperative and pressuring members to pay an urgent past-due balance to avoid disconnection.

These calls appear to be well organized, using advanced technology and multiple individuals to make the scheme seem legitimate.

What Members Should Know
  • Calls are coming from a variety of numbers that appear to be trustworthy. Some may come from a local area code or “spoofed” DREMC number, while others are using toll-free numbers.
  • Some members are being asked to call a separate number to make a payment. The line plays a  recording of Duck River Electric’s standard phone menu to further convince the member that the phone line is authentic.
  • Scammers will use any clue a member drops in conversation to make themselves seem authentic. One member reported that when he remarked on the phone that he was locked out of his account, the scammer immediately said “yes, I’m seeing that too.”
What Members Should Do
  • DREMC will never demand immediate payment by phone or threaten sudden disconnection.
  • If something feels off, hang up and contact DREMC directly.
  • Only contact DREMC using the number listed on your bill or our official website, dremc.com.
  • Stay alert, protect your information, and report suspicious calls so we can help keep our members safe!

Remember, the only way to ensure you’re speaking with DREMC is to use an official DREMC number. All official numbers are available at the bottom of our website, dremc.com.

DREMC is working with local media and law enforcement agencies to inform members about this fraudulent activity, and will continue to update the public as new information comes in.
