Ten students win DREMC’s writing contest, Washington Youth Tour

Ten area high school juniors will tour Washington, D.C., June 8-14 as winners of DREMC’s Washington Youth Tour Writing Contest. Students wrote short stories on “Electric Cooperative: Going Beyond the Wires.”

Winners of DREMC’s writing contest are shown in the photos below. They are, from left, Zachary Lohn and Katie Warren from Bedford County; Sara Dove and Sydney Horton from Coffee County; Hannah Bradley and AshLee Christenson from Franklin County; Pilar Garcia and Abby Gourley from Marshall County; Jensen Schmidt from Maury County; and Maddie Raulerson from Moore County.

The DREMC winners will join almost 200 others representing other Tennessee cooperatives on the trip. Brenda Brown of Forrest High School in Marshall County will assume the coveted faculty spot on this year’s tour, an assignment that is rotated annually among area high schools.

In Washington, the Tennessee delegation will become part of a larger group of students, nearly 1,800 from other states who also participate in the event coordinated by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

“The Youth Tour is an incredible opportunity for these students to experience history up-close and personal,” said DREMC Publications and Marketing Specialist Connie Potts. “Delegates experience a whirlwind of a week, visiting museums, monuments and other landmarks.”

DREMC congratulates these students on winning and thanks all juniors who participated in the competition by entering short stories.
