Understanding Digital and AMI Meters: Frequently Asked Questions

Summary

Duck River Electric uses modern digital metering technology throughout its service territory to help provide reliable electric service, improve outage response and operate more efficiently.

The following questions address topics members commonly ask about digital meters, including those that use Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technology.

What is an AMI meter?

AMI stands for Advanced Metering Infrastructure.

AMI technology allows electric usage information to be collected automatically rather than requiring an employee to physically read the meter each month. AMI technology also supports outage detection and other system functions that help electric utilities operate more efficiently.

Why does Duck River Electric use AMI meters?

AMI technology provides several benefits for members and the cooperative, including:

  • Improved outage detection and restoration
  • More accurate meter readings
  • Reduced operating costs
  • Faster identification of service issues
  • Improved system reliability

These efficiencies help Duck River Electric provide safe, reliable service while keeping costs as low as possible for the membership.

Are digital and AMI meters safe?

Duck River Electric uses digital and AMI meters that meet applicable safety requirements, industry standards and regulations.

Do AMI meters emit radio frequency (RF) energy?

Yes. AMI meters use radio frequency signals to communicate information. This technology is similar to many other wireless devices used every day. Common household examples that can produce greater RF exposure include cellphones, Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, baby monitors and microwave ovens.

The RF emissions from AMI meters are regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and must operate within established safety limits.

How often does an AMI meter transmit information?

AMI meters do not continuously stream information.

The timing and frequency of communications vary based on system needs and meter configuration. AMI meters transmit operational and billing information intermittently rather than continuously.

What information does an AMI meter collect?

AMI meters collect information related to electric usage.

The purpose of the meter is to measure electricity use and support system operations. It is not equipped with a microphone or camera and does not record conversations or capture images or video inside a home.

Can Duck River Electric see what appliances I am using?

No. AMI meters measure a home’s total electricity use and are not linked to or able to control individual appliances.

Although Duck River Electric does not currently analyze usage by appliance, some utilities may use software to infer appliance use from energy patterns. Even when software analyzes these patterns, the results are approximations rather than direct readings.

Does Duck River Electric sell member usage data?

No. Duck River Electric uses metering information to provide electric service, support billing and operate the electric system. Member information is handled in accordance with applicable policies and regulations.

Can members opt out of digital or AMI metering?

Duck River Electric’s standard metering technology is digital metering. Members with questions about metering options or service requirements are encouraged to contact the cooperative directly.

Who can I contact if I have questions?
